Welcome!

As I sit down to write my first blog post I am just a few short days away from turning 30 years old.  My son, daughter and husband are performing some of my favorite Rend Collective songs for me and I am feeling eager and excited about what this next year will bring for me and my little family.

HELLO!

My name is Abbey.  I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, Jesus follower and desert dweller. My husband, Caleb, and I got married in 2009 and have two children, ages 4 and almost 3!  Caleb and I try to create a home life where the kids can be involved in daily tasks such as laundry or dishes and embrace new skills such as cooking/baking and sewing.  Having this united goal is the reason I began walking down this path.

A little more than a year ago I received a phone call from my Dad.  He said “Hey Abb, would you ever consider starting an online business with Mom and I?”  This did not come as a total surprise because it is an idea my parents have had for a while.  One thing to know about my parents is that when they have an idea they go for it without hesitation.  The coined term “go big or go home” applies.  They never do things half-heartedly which is why they so often find success. I knew this business venture would be the same.

HomeGrown HomeSewn is the product of that phone call.  We are a family owned business with a goal of helping families create the quality of life and family time they want.  We strive for the revival of a culture who puts more emphasis on being together rather than getting ahead.  How do we do this?  We believe that spending time with your kids, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, etc. and integrating in legacy arts will help you achieve this goal.  Legacy arts, as we call them, are quilting, sewing, crocheting, cooking, etc.  We offer sewing and quilting kits to aid you in this process.  This idea is molded by my upbringing as well as my mother’s.  She learned to sew at age 7 and has never stopped.  Although she would deny it, her skills are amazing.  She made her clothes while in high school and made most of my baby clothes.  She even made her own wedding dress…yes, it’s beautiful!  She passed on this love and knowledge of sewing to me.

Throughout my posts I hope you will experience my life with two children as I try to do the very thing HomeGrown HomeSewn was created to do.  I will be passing on my love of sewing, quilting, cooking, baking, gardening; mostly in pots because I just cannot get used to desert gardening, and crocheting; if I can ever get the hang of it!!.  These passions are already heavily integrated in our lives but will be more so in the coming year as I begin the journey of homeschooling my son.  I hope to have guest bloggers, reposts of other inspiring parents/homeschoolers and lots of pictures to show you I practice what I preach and I am becoming a better mom/wife for it.

Come along with me on this journey and find encouragement in what you read and see.  I am sure I will need encouragement as well so please feel free to respond with stories of your own journeys in the comments below or emailing me at blog@homegrownhomesewn.com

Next time on the blog… “I’m off to Texas!”
